The YOUCAT
Catholicism has been described by people as a religion that is very disconnected from the youth. The Church is trying to bring youth back and the YOUCAT is part of that movement. It is essentially a youth version of the Catechism with some extra explanations.
I bought some of these to help my religion curriculum more academic depth so kids actually know what we believe as Catholics. I am honestly okay with children deciding not be Catholic when they get older, but I want them to know what they are choosing not to believe in rather than just choosing on to believe because it isn't cool.
The Good- Well, let's face it, there isn't a lot out there for Catholic youth that is relevant. The YOUCAT looks cool and still sticks to it's message. It does a good job adding info to the catechism, so I love it for myself, but is it good for kids?
The Bad - It still isn't an easy read. I mean, for any teacher it is fine, but for any of your students who struggle with reading it will still be above their comprehension level which is a shame.
Do I recommend the YOUCAT? Yes. Worth getting, but you don't need one for every youth in your class. I bought five for my students and I think that is enough as they can then study it as part of group work.
