"I see this as a very innovative and in theory very beneficial new look on education."
"What makes this school different is the architecture (seems very good!) and that they have substituted qualified teachers with laptops."
"is this school for grown up kids, who don’t need monitoring and disciplinary watch-keeping!!!"
And what school does this controversy surround....???

Edudemic reported on Telefonplan School, a Swedish educational institution that focuses on fostering project-based learning. The architecture is modern, sculptural, and a bit on the crazy side.
While there is little information on how well this system is working, it is interesting to think back to the years where this was tried in Canada. Many schools went "Wall-less", only to realize that the noise, classroom management, and open space led to chaos instead of collaboration.
Is this because our students are on a graded, focused curriculum rather than an open, led by interest and achievement, style of learning? Or is it because this is an idealistic but silly dream?

Perhaps it is all about the style of the teacher. If you saw a student laying on top of this couch type structure, would you tell them to get off and get working, or just leave them to their brainstorming/sleeping? I can't honestly say what I would do. I struggle with teaching curriculum when kids are passionate about something that doesn't happen to be at their grade level, but we need to cover it for standardized testing. On the other hand, I know structure can be extremely important for both teachers and kids to stay on track.
Here is hoping that this school is successful! I would love to be fully convinced that an environment like this would work. How wonderful would it be for a teacher to sit with a group of students, their ages spread out over a few years, and you are guiding them on a social justice project to help a sister school in Kenya? Then a couple hours later you can be found assisting another group with some guided reading, using a graphic novel, and maybe having an older student assist you for some work experience?
